Is Epstein-Barr Virus Contagious?

Picture
EBV is highly contagious.  It can be passed from one person to another by close contact, kissing, sharing food, and coughing, and it can be sexually transmitted.  A person cannot become immune to EBV, and antibiotics will not help, because it is a viral disease.  The virus causes “overreaction” of the immune system, which results in a type of immunity “burnout”.

A common aspect of this virus is its ability to establish a lifelong latent infection after the initial infection.  This latent infection is kept in check by a normal immune system, but when the immune system is compromised in any way, this virus can become active.

Support and enhancement of immune system function is perhaps the most important and vital step in achieving host resistance, reducing susceptibility to a chronically disturbed or compromised immune system.
